Learn About Atrial Fibrillation
Rapid and irregular beating of your heart could mean that you are suffering from atrial fibrillation. One is said to have atrial fibrillation if his or her atria and ventricles do not beat rhythmically. There is permanent atrial fibrillation and temporary atrial fibrillation. Temporary atrial fibrillation comes and goes all on its own. Permanent atrial fibrillation can be managed if you see your doctor regularly. Though atrial fibrillation on its own is not life-threatening, one needs to seek medical advice because it could cause illnesses such as stroke, that are life-threatening.
The main concern with atrial fibrillation is that it could lead to the formation of blood clots in the upper chambers of the heart which could spread to other organs in the body causing ischemia.
Physicians classify atrial fibrillation into four classes which are occasional, long-standing persistent, persistent and permanent.
With occasional atrial fibrillations, symptoms occur for a week with episodes taking up a few minutes or hours. If you have persistent atrial fibrillation, you need treatment for your heart’s rhythm to go back to normal. In long-standing atrial fibrillation, yoir symptoms last for more than a year.
Some common signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation are fatigue, heart palpitations, abdominal pains, chest discomfort, light-headedness, exercise intolerance and awareness that yoir heart is beating. Most people with atrial fibrillation are older adults. Studies show that atrial fibrillation is diagnosed as the cause of strokes in older adults in older adults because the condition does not have any symptoms prior to that. A stroke will occur when the blood clots formed in the upper chambers of the heart because of atrial fibrillation move to the brain.
Teens are less likely to get atrial fibrillation. However, teens have reported getting symptoms of atrial fibrillation. Most teens suffering from atrial fibrillation complain of abdominal pains and heart palpitations. Atrial fibrillation is less dangerous in teens than it is in older adults since their hearts are stronger and healthier. Atrial fibrillation in teens is triggered by the use of alcohol and drugs and exercising.
There are a number of things you can do to lower your chances of getting atrial fibrillation. To prevent yourself from getting atrial fibrillation, ensure that you eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. You also need to avoid taking alcohol and drinks with caffeine.
